I think there's more than just using a belief system to sucker someone
into an MLM. I think, in part, the king pimps, er, I mean king pins
that are doing this as a self justification. I don't want to go into
all the psychological logic, but the short of it is they want to
believe they are doing God's work. I honestly think when Bird-brain,
er, I mean Birdy Yeager stood up and said God had given her more
material for "Acts of the Apostles" that she truly believed she was in
communication with God and was receiving information. It can be argued
that she was, in fact, in communication with the God she worships,
since her actions show she likely worships money and wealth more than a
man that led a simple life and lived 2,000 years ago. (Some, depending
on their beliefs, might agree that she was in contact with her God, or
god, and that she has yet to realize her god has pointed ears and a
tail with a point on the end.)

On the one hand, they want to believe they are special and are seen as
special by their deity, on the other hand, they want to believe they
are doing what their deity has told them to do. This gives them the
right and duty to do whatever they can to forward their goals. Once it
is accepted their work is divinely sanctioned and even divinely
ordered, the end justifies any means they feel driven to.

I think they also need it, psychologically, to justify being rich. We
know and remember lines like rich men entering Heaven and the eye of
the needle and, to some extend, so do they, so it's needed, in their
minds, to assure them they're good and it's okay to be rich.

Another point I think is important, and I've mentioned this before, is
that people think faith is about believing without thinking. It is
accepting without question and without analyzing or reasoning through
the situation. Some religions expect people to think through details,
such as Zen Buddhism with their Zen coens, designed to make people
think through different ideas, such as "What is the sound of one hand
clapping?"

Faith, though, is more about a willingness to believe. It does not mean
one should not think through something or should not ask questions, but
for a leader, it's much easier to have people believe what you say
without question. Then you can push your own agenda and you don't have
to worry about being confronted with questions or ideas that may prove
you wrong.

I know some people aren't going to like me saying this, but there are
some forms of Christianity that don't want their members to think.
These are the groups that say the minister is right and that one should
believe without asking questions. The focus is on a blind faith,
which, notice, is much like the blind faith Hitler expected people to
have in him, that Jim Jones encouraged, and that David Koreshi
expected.

If you deal with people in a church that already expects people to have
blind faith and to not doubt or ask questions, then it's easy to move
in on such a person and say, "God [or Jesus] sent me to make you
wealthy and to help you help others. Don't ask questions. Don't
think. Just do exactly what I tell you."

In some ways, churches that preach this kind of blind faith are doing
their congregation a disservice because they are training them to
follow authority blindly, wherever it leads, and they are setting them
up to be taken by shysters like the king pimps because all someone has
to do is say, "God sent me," and what follows is supposed to be
accepted blindly.

Just my 2 cents worth.
