I only post here once but been lurking ever since. However, I must
address your question. I never been in a MLM before but I do know some
people who are.
I work at SBUX and I'm going to school. I have co-workers who are in
this company who tried to use deceptive ways just to get me and others
to their meetings by saying:
1) This is the dream job.
2) You won't believe until you actually come to the meeting.
3) I tell you this opportunity is hard to pass up, ETC.
This co-worker would NOT tell me the name of the company even after I
asked 5 times. It wasn't until I had demanded to know what it was and
what I would be doing that he told me it was Primerica.
Now I am an engineering student with only 3 financial classes (two
taught by engineering professors who wanted to make sure we knew the
basic of finances...and I do mean basic).
So I decided to test my co-worker to see how this all work since he
"advises" people on their financial situation. I have credit card
debts and a student loan totaling 5K and wanted to know what's the
best way to pay them off.
My co-worker could NOT help me with anything and kept trying to get me
to sign up for another loan when I said no, he kept insisting I go to
the meeting (again I said no) so he took my number and said he would
get another guy to call me who can explain my situation and Primerica
(still waiting for that call but I doubt I will get it since I
straight up told my co-worker that Primerica was a MLM scam and he
should get real classes in Finance).
Another MLM company that crept up into the work place is Market
America. Another co-worker of mine had a cousin who went to the
meeting and than told him all about it. Well this co-worker (never
been to the meeting at all only heard about it) is getting all hyped
over and is thinking about quitting College to promote Market America.
At this point I don't know what to do or say to him yet since I'm
shocked that a MLM can hit so hard on a person and they know so little
about it. He wants to know if I would join his team if he signs up for
Market America (um...no).
In conclusion, these companies prey on people's dream of the future.
They are the dream stealer.
