I think Hal hit it right on the head in regards to the motivation of
the kingpins and their appeal to religion:
>>>I think, in part, the king pimps, er, I mean king pins that are
doing this as a self justification. I don't want to go into all the
psychological logic, but the short of it is they want to believe they
are doing God's work ... I think they also need it, psychologically, to
justify being rich<<<
I got to know a few big pins personally and they truly believed they
are doing God's work. I remember hearing things like "This Lexus will
give me a bigger pedestal to reach people about God," and "Young people
only listen to rich people, if I wasn't rich I couldn't influence kids
any better than the flashy drug dealer down the street." (Isn't it
funny though how two of the most influential people in Christianity
were Jesus and the apostle Paul, both of who had almost no material
possessions)
It is also important to note that kingpins didn't invent this sort of
theology. They didn't wake up one day and say "We need to find more
people, let's pretend we're Christians so we can tap into a gullible
audience."
KingPins tend to perpetuate and teach the Prosperity/Word-
theology that was started many years before MLM's came about
(http://en.wikipedia
early leaders like Dexter Yager and Bill Britt were originally
Christians and found this movement very appealing to justify their
desire to become wealthy.
You may also find interesting that this is a very fast growing movement
in the US, particularly among poorer people. Many church leaders and
MLMers have come to find that preaching "it's God's will for you to be
rich, all you need is faith and to tithe/give your money to me" is a
very marketable and sexy approach to Christianity.
To answer the OP's question:
>>>Is this typical of an MLM, or is this LTD just it's own special
brand of crazy?<<<
This is typical Prosperity Theology which many MLM groups are a part
of. It's a special kind of crazy that makes me want to puke.
