>in the 1980s, the people I knew in it were told not to say "Amway" until after "The Plan" was complete, since it had such a bad reputation.
I was an IBO during the mid-90s and that was the method then. You had your VHS tape presentation and toward the end of the clip, if memory serves, there was a very brief shot of the name "Amway" displayed on something (I think the side of a truck). I cannot remember if there were any other displays of "Amway" beyond that.
I do remember being taught the "feel, felt, found" method for countering a negative response from a prospect to Amway.
"I know how you FEEL. I FELT the same way. Here's what I FOUND." -shudder- Of course, I FOUND nothing truthful until later in the game. Fortunately, I was only in for roughly a year. But, I lost a great deal of money, relatively speaking. I had a box full of tapes, which I destroyed and discarded years later. My sponsors never offered to buy back anything and I didn't pursue the matter.
At the time, my sponsor and I both worked in the film industry as camera assistants. He worked on a lot of big shows and started calling me to work with him (film is freelance work). After years of struggling, I thought my film career was finally going to take off. However, I eventually learned I was merely a business opportunity as he slowly introduced me to the plan and began inviting me to meetings. I ultimately signed up and as long as I was in the "business" he called me for film jobs.
Once I made the decision to leave Amway, my phone stopped ringing for film work. For a while it was slow going until I built up another contact base.
You cannot convince me these people are ethical and have your best interests in mind. You're a mark. That's all.
