I think someone else in this thread already mentioned it, but I'll
elaborate a bit. I think many at the top of the MLM's prey on the
religious for several reasons. One is the social aspect. Two would
be the group being pre-conditioned to trust authority figures. Three
would be being pre-conditioned to trust fellow members or believers.
Four would be a certain level of gullibility (think donations to
televangelists)
predisposes them to be attracted to 'easy money' schemes (lotteries,
ponzi schemes, etc.).
That's just off the top of my head, but I think it says something
about both MLM's and the religious.

pads in living rooms in the early 70's)
