PW gave the correct answer - I'll offer some background (my
Grandfather was one of the Founding Distributors of Amway in 1959)
There were always a few high-ranking Amway Distributors who were
always looking for that "hook" to build a bigger business, faster.
They were forever skirting the edges of Amway Rules (or flagrantly
ignoring it, in some cases). At some point, they realized a separate
"training system" with information provided/sold by them would put
more money in their pockets.
By 1983, this had become enough of a problem that the company was
becoming alarmed - the famous "Postma Memo" was written to apprise
Amway Corp bigwigs of the problem (and it basically acknowledges that
by that point, the Kingpin it mentioned was more or less
"blackmailing" the Corporation with a "leave me alone or I'll take my
huge downline to another MLM). Even Rich DeVos recorded a tape in
which he calls the AMO tactics "against Corp Rules".
Bottom line: nothing was done to stop these AMOs - and they continued
to run amok, more or less controlling the Corporation (in my opinion).
So this confrontation with the TEAM AMO is interesting, in that it's
the first sign the Corporation might be ready to finally stop the AMO
practices??? Or at least rein them in, somewhat.
From what I read, the leaders of TEAM have been out on the "thin ice
of life", telling IBOs they are NOT a part of Amway (?) and that if
the Corp doesn't do what they want, they'll go elsewhere. According
to Amway's lawsuit - TEAM has taught illegal business methods that
could jeopardize Amway with the FTC. You can only thumb your nose at
someone as big as Amway for so long...before they begin to take notice.
If you stop the AMOs - then Amway/Quixtar simply becomes what it was
in the beginning: a way to sell products and earn a little extra money.
