I should emphasize that I am not coming down on either side of this debate because I think the individual reasons why people get sucked in to something are exactly that - individual.
But I just wanted to say that "assertiveness" has nothing to do with "self esteem". People who lack self esteem can be all the more assertive because of that.
Lack of self esteem does not mean "shy" either.

Oh my gosh.....please don't think that because YOU were lacking in self
esteem that every MLM survivor is the same. I have no issues with
assertiveness AT ALL. And have no problems telling someone to get lost if
they don't hear my polite "no thank you, not interested in the least".
What MLMs capitalize on IMHO is people's hopes and their trust in people,
but specifically their hopes in the career/finance arena which translates for
most to a "better life". I've known many MLMers over the years and while
there are always a greedy few, most aren't looking to be rich, just to have
enough to not have to live paycheck to paycheck. MLMs lure people with
that false hope and believe me --- ANYONE, even those with a decent
helping of self confidence can fall prey to it when they don't know all the
facts.
I think that if one was approached by a MLM disciple and handed the true
stats on success (not the watered down versions you see on most MLM
company comp plans) along with whatever hype they are preaching, then
there'd be a lot less folks bothering to get involved with MLMs in the first
place. But the truth is they lie, give you success percentages with those
that have gotten involved and left taken out. They preach to your hopes,
rely on your trust, and use falsified information.
Unfortunately, once you are in, its hard to see past the fog to the truth
(because why would this new family of yours lie to you?) So even when
they do hear the fact that less than 2% of those that get involved with MLM
will make any money - they don't believe it. Think its a trick of some sort.
I read somewhere (here maybe?) that if you're going in for a surgery and
there's a 98% chance of no serious complications - do you assume or
hope you'll be a part of that 98% or do you just KNOW you'll be a part of
that 2% to incur serious issues???
I digress.
I'm not sure where you have gotten your low self esteem stories from but it
isn't this group. lol...assertiveness doesn't seem to be an issue here.
