Best as I can tell, from doing a little web surfing via Google, Rachel
Ray has allowed her name to be associated with Taste of Home
Entertaining, Inc., a direct sales company. Consultants can offer
subscriptions to Rachel Ray's magazine. Chef Mario Batali has also
associated his name with the company.
I went to the Taste of Home Entertaining website and clicked the About
link. A snippet from it says:
***********
Taste of Home Entertaining, Inc. is a subsidiary of The Reader's
Digest Association, Inc., Pleasantville, New York.
As a key element of a larger strategic plan, RDA acquired Reiman
Publishing and their flagship magazine, Taste of Home in 2002. In
April of 2005 Bill Shaw joined Taste of Home Entertaining, Inc. as
President and began the process of founding a new direct selling
company as an extension of the Taste of Home brand.
The 49-year-old Shaw came to RDA after a distinguished career in
direct sales which included the launch of one of America's most
successful party plan companies.

I also read the FAQ... this is definitely MLM, party-plan style. It
specifically mentions recruiting. Bleah. It's evidently very new,
because the FAQ also states that the first convention is July 2007.
I used to subscribe to Taste of Home and Quick Cooking magazines
several years ago, but let the subscriptions expire because I've got
enough cookbooks/new recipes to try to last me a decade. Now I'm not
sure I'd resubscribe, even if I wanted to, just out of principle of
not wanting to be even remotely associated with an MLM.
As far as I'm concerned, Reader's Digest has given itself a black eye,
becoming associated with MLM. I don't object to getting Readers Digest
catalogs in the mail, and occasionally will order books, but there's
no way I'd ever, ever get involved in direct selling again. I might
even stop ordering from RD altogether, and just buy everything via
amazon.com instead.
