Being a paid spokesperson is something that nearly all celebrities do at
some point in time. It's part of the celebrity business.
I used to work in advertising for a bank, and we hired Cal Ripken, Jr. to be
a paid spokesperson. All the business was done with his agency, and
everything he did for us had a price, including signing baseballs, which
were around $150 each. Even the telephone calls with his agent were
billable. I believe we paid him (his agency) somewhere in the neighborhood
of a hundred thousand dollars to "associate his name" with us for three
months. To my knowledge he never set foot in one of our branches, and we
never actually met him the entire time.
So, don't let the business of celebrity endorsements sway you one way or
another. It's dollars and cents, pure and simple.
It's the ones that do it for free you have to worry about.
