I went yesterday to get my taxes done.
Arbonne had sent me a 1099 form with my "income" of $798 in one box
and then marked a little checkmark to the side that said "This person
purchased over $5000 of products to retail to a buyer". I was
confused by this for quite some time. Then Arbonne also sent me a
statement saying showing how much product I had "purchased for
retail" ($6,700) compared with my income.
When I showed this to my accountant, I expressed to her that I was
really unsure what they were trying to do by all of this. Her exact
words were "They're being ugly to you". Then she began to explain to
me that Arbonne was reporting to the IRS that I had SOLD over $6K
worth of product, when I indeed did not. Some of it was for personal
use, some of it was product I bought for my own consultants and only
reimbursed my cost, and the rest was product I bought for "sample
kits" and such. I never made ANY pocket cash b/c I never was able to
retail a single thing due to their prices being so high.
Long story short, my accountant used to work for the IRS and was able
to make things not turn out so bad for me after all. However, I
realized first hand that Arbonne uses this type of info to inflate to
the public how well they are really doing. Making people thing that
their consultants are doing "so well" when indeed they are not....and
also inflating their stock prices.....does the name "Enron" come to
mind??
Anyway, just wanted to share that. I'm sure many of you here are
already very familiar with this tactic. My accountant told me all
Direct Sales/MLMs report this way.
Makes me sick. Why can't they be stopped?? I'm so glad I'm out.
