Here's a thought: Tell them you really aren't interested and, as a
friend, why do they want you to do something that your heart is not in?
When they keep going, say, "Since this is a business deal, if I don't
like it, will you pay me for my time?" If they agree, which they just
might, then say, "And if you're so sure I'll love it, then you should
have no objection to paying me up front and if I decide it's a good
chance, I'll just give the money back to you afterwards. Okay?"
Seriously, I know the logic and illogic of this. I've been studying it
for a few years and, as people here can tell you, love to tear about
idiots who think that they have found something different. Yet I would
not go to an open meeting with the idea I can make someone look dumb.
They don't give time for questions and keep firm control of it all.
The only way you could make them look dumb is if you were outside, where
you could hear them, and had a mic you could put on the same channel
they're using and toss in a comment or two at the right time, but not
enough that they turn off the receiver until after you've thrown in the
real ringer. And even at that, you'd have to be VERY careful in what
you said and when.
