Hal,
I loved seeing the quote "Insanity is doing the same thing over and
over and expecting to get a different result the next time."
In my signature line of my email I have "Insanity is continuing to
do what we have always done
and expecting a different outcome." That is a quote from Freud!
And
avery true one. During my MLM insanity, I continued to sign up for
MLM after MLM and couldn't figure out why it always ended the
same...
spent too much money on tools, inventory, never made a profit, no
one
wanted to buy from me or book parties...
I made my comparison to AA because that is what I know. I lived
with
an alcoholic/substance abuser. I attended AA meetings with him.
Each
week someone would speak about their experiences with alcohol, how
it
destroyed them, how they recovered, how they work every day at their
recovery. I also stood by him as he went through rehab. He shared
with me the tools that they use in rehab. They teach them WHY they
are addicted and how to focus on other things any time the "urge"
should hit.
My addiction with MLM was kind of similar. Losing my job was a
reason
to sign up, boredom was a reason to sign up, depression was a reason
to sign up. "This one is new so get in on the ground floor" was a
reason to sign up.
I had to focus on other things in life when I wanted to sign up for
another one. Eventually it worked. That, and coming here and
reading
other people's experiences. When I would read about someone else's
loss thru MLM and then how they kicked the habit and reclaimed their
life, it would help keep me from signing up for the next great thing
in MLM. When I joined here a year ago, I had just signed up with
TOHE. They never "hurt" me one bit. But that is because after
coming
here, I was reminded that it was insane to think that this one would
be any different than Home Interiors, or Tupperware, or Mary Kay, or
Jafra... the list goes on.
This SURVIVORS group helped me to SURVIVE and move away from the MLM
trap.
If the discussion of "not all MLM's are bad" would have been going
on
at that time, I am sure I would have latched on to that and told
myself that TOHE was "new" "unsaturated"
adjective
you want to throw in there. Maybe I would have lost $1000 bucks in
additional inventory. And since I was PREGNANT at the time, I would
have told myself that I could work from home after the baby was
born... but I never would have gotten it off the ground because the
reality is that I wouldn't have been able to cart all that crap
around
while pregnant, I wouldn't have wanted to leave my baby to do
parties
at night, and i wouldn't have the income that I have now to support
him and buy him the things he needs.
So I was able to STOP THE INSANITY by joining a group that was anti-
MLM and told me of all the evils that lurk in MLM endeavors.
Instead
of giving me hope that I might get lucky and be one of the 1% that
make money at it.
