We believe that my MIL has NPD and truthfully, I didn't see much in Lori's
post that stood out. I'm not a doctor but for some unknown reason the
universe has seen fit to bless me with several family members that have
personality issues (both in my family and my husband's). Extensive
research is the only way to be able to even somewhat comprehend the
mess it brings to one's life and manage it.
Selfishness and cultlike behavior do not mean a personality disorder.
The two things that I personally think that stand out the most for those
around an NPD person are a complete (COMPLETE) lack of empathy and
the delusions of grandeur.
lol...I remember when my MIL met my dad's wife for the first time (a
wonderful woman with a PhD in social work and a therapist for over 30
years, taught at Universities, etc). My MIL who never went to college
introduced herself to my stepmom and said, "I hear we have so much in
common, I have a background in psychology too". Now, anyone that knows
her knows she talking about the Al Anon course she took once over 20
years ago.
No...I've seen NPD behavior and MLM behavior and the two might seem
similar to those who have not experienced true personality disorders but in
my eyes they are nothing alike AT ALL.
Lori, so sorry you are faced with having to step away from a family member.
I can speak from experience on that and know that no matter the altercation,
its not an easy thing to do. Be strong and stay true to yourself! I think that
I've learned that I do not have to hate those with issues, but I also do not
have to break bread with the either (just because they are family).
