It's also a matter of consistency. There's a certain comfort in
knowing what to expect, so long as the details vary a bit.
Just about everyone comes into the function seeking to gain something
from it. The investment in getting there adds to the urgency of
getting something from being there. When something is said from the
stage, there's a strong sense that "If I am not where I want to be,
it's because I didn't hear what they were trying to say the last time
I was here." So you take more notes, you listen more closely and you
draw meaning from things that perhaps don't have as much meaning as
you think they do.
I know that when I went back through some function notes I had taken,
I found it difficult to believe that I thought much of what I had
written down was important enough to take note.
When you're IN it, you are led to give it all meaning because (they
say) it will lead to wealth and success. Not doing that is "negative"
and will slow your progress.
And when you get OUT of it, you feel pretty dumb and angry for having
been so manipulated. That's much of the reason why most ex-IBOs slink
away quietly after quitting. I believe this group would be many times
larger if it wasn't for this effect.
