I read somewhere that their reason is to put all their worldwide
operations under one name. Since it's still Amway in the rest of the
world, they want to capitalize on the strength of that name, despite
its negative connotations in the US. Quixtar, though less negative,
is far less known. They apparently feel that a well-known but
negative name is better than an unknown name, and believe they can
change attitudes about the name Amway.
BTW, my sister and her husband have been in Amway since the early
'90's. I remember them explaining the name to Quixtar as being the
result of the move to the Internet and e-commerce. Of course, it was
also nice to be able to steer clear of the old name. At the time,
they didn't pretend it wasn't Amway repackaged, although they probably
do now.
