This may be a don't-throw-
And it's something in which knowing the history of MLM can be useful.
Honestly, I don't know that much about how Fuller Brush operates its
MLM, but I understand that there are several companies that utilize
MLM as a component, albeit a minor one, of what they do. Many of
these companies pre-date Amway and have no record of being abusive. I
have not heard from an ex-Fuller Brush rep who complained about it
being abusive or a scam, but that doesn't mean I know for sure one way
or the other about it.
In its earliest form, MLM was another kind of commissioned sales work.
The most obvious example of a similar structure would be the
insurance industry in which company reps receive compensation for
policies written by reps whom they recruit. The reason, as I
understand it, that insurance companies are not considered MLM is that
while reps receive some kind of compensation from policies written by
their recruits, they do not group their compensation based on multiple
levels, such as PV/BV calculations in AmQuix.
Personally, I believe this sort of arrangement is not harmful and can
encourage reps to recruit talented people into their companies. If
the company, itself, is a product-oriented company, keeping the focus
on manufacturing and retailing products to customers, they may be
helping their business to utilize MLM as an incentive to their
workforce. It's when the recruiting side of the equation gets out of
hand that the abuses begin.
If we look at the companies we patronize with an eye toward whether or
not there is abuse in their systems, our vigilance can be more
focused, and hopefully more effective. Boycotting QVC because they
sell or endorse Fuller Brush might be a bit over-the-top by this measure.
