This isn't meant as an attack on who the writer is or what she thinks,
but it is a point to all those who don't care enough to make their
posts readable. (And I repeat that paragraph a number of times in this
message to make the point it's not about her, it's about posts written
so poorly it's hard to know what is being said.)

I stopped reading this post here. Why? I couldn't follow it or
understand it. I'm not trying to be judgemental or condescending, but
this has come up before. I have a learning disability and, without
spellcheck, would have a terrible time making sure my email was
readable (no, not dyslexia, but not far off). I work hard and have to
retype many words and sentences because I get letters and words mixed
up. I do that because I want people to understand what I'm writing.
I started reading this wonder if the writer likes Jen or is like Jen,
then I see "why??" and think the question marks indicate the end of a
sentence, but then I read on and I"m not clear if I should read it like
this:
Hi, I like Jen also. Am wonder why? You would be using so much of this
stuff?
Or:
Hi, I, like Jen, also, am wondering why? You would be using so much of
this stuff?
Or:
Hi, I, like Jen, also, am wondering why you would be using so much of
this stuff.

If, when I was teaching English, I wanted something to use to illustrate
how confusing a sentence or patchwork of phrases could be without any
punctuation, this would be perfect. The question marks tell me this
person can use a shift key, but I *HONSETLY* just cannot be sure what
is being written.
I know this writer has said she has RA and she doesn't "bother with
capitals unless for real emphasis" (her own words). However, that is
no excuse for something that is as hard to read as that first sentence.
It doesn't stop there. I kept reading, but was so confused when I
stopped I thought, "If this isn't important enough to the writer to
make the effort to ensure it's readable, why should I make even more
effort to read it than the writer took to write it?"
This post would have been a lot clearer if the writer had taken all the
effort used for the extra question marks, multiple periods, all caps
words, and so on, and put that same effort into just a minimal amount
of punctuation to make it clear. Does emphasizing something make a
difference if the reader can barely tell what's being said in the first
place? (And the Australian vs. American grammar has nothing to do with
these issues.)
I was sympathetic to the RA point at first, but it seems quite clear to
me at this point that the issue is not RA, but a willingness to just
dash off something without focusing on making it readable. RA has
nothing to do with this.
I know I'm going to get attacked for this and will likely be called a
nasty bastard because I'm daring to be non-pc in regards to a
disability, but I spent years teaching the disabled and had to learn
when to separate the disability from the result and, after having read
posts like this for a while, think this is one of those times.

Language is the tool we use for communication, to make our views known,
to express our feelings, and it is the tool we use for thinking and
reasoning. When I was a kid, I learned woodworking from my Father.
There are times I see someone who doesn't know how to hold a hammer or
knows that you have to account for the thickness of the saw blade when
cutting wood. When I see someone who can't handle the tools well
trying to do woodworking, what do I know about their ability as a
woodworking craftsman? By that extension, when I (or any of us) see
someone using the tools of thought, logic, and communication poorly,
what conclusion will most of us draw of that person?
Yes, I'm being nasty, but I'm also doing Laurel a big favor by holding
her to the standards that most people on this list do their best to
meet: I'm encouraging her to present herself in a way that doesn't make
educated people wonder if she is clear, in her own mind, what she's
talking about.

I'm hesitant to post this because I don't want to jump on someone, but I
am posting it because I'm selfish enough to want to be able to
understand what others are saying. If I have experience in reading and
helping students clarify poorly written text and have trouble reading
this, then I'm sure I'm not the only one.
